Mumbai, the city of dreams, is the
capital of Maharashtra. It is the most populous and the
wealthiest city in India. Lying on the west coast
of India, it is also one of the busiest ports of India. Originally constituted
of seven islands, present land of Mumbai is an outcome of Hornby
Vellard project of mid 18th century which reclaimed
the area between the islands from the sea.
Mumbai derives its name from ‘Mumba’ and ‘Aai’. ‘Mumba’ is the name
of the Hindu goddess ‘Mumbadevi’ and
meaning of ‘Aai’ in Marathi language is mother.
The city has been variously referred to as Manbai, Bombaim,
Tana-Maiambu, Boon Bay and Bon Bahia by 16th and
17th century writers. It is believed that the Portuguese name ‘Bombaim’,
which means ‘good bay’, has been anglicised as Bombay by British. The city was
renamed as Mumbai in 1995. The renaming was a result of a movement that was
directed to strengthen Marathi identity. However, the city is still largely
known as Bombay despite official name change.
