Mumbai, the city of dreams, is the capital of Maharashtra.  It is the most populous and the wealthiest city in India.  Lying on the west coast of India, it is also one of the busiest ports of India. Originally constituted of seven islands, present land of Mumbai is an outcome of Hornby Vellard project of mid 18th century which reclaimed the area between the islands from the sea.
Mumbai derives its name from ‘Mumba’ and ‘Aai’. ‘Mumba’ is the name of the Hindu goddess ‘Mumbadevi’ and meaning of ‘Aai’ in Marathi language is mother.  The city has been variously referred to as Manbai, Bombaim, Tana-Maiambu,  Boon Bay and Bon Bahia by 16th and 17th century writers. It is believed that the Portuguese name ‘Bombaim’, which means ‘good bay’, has been anglicised as Bombay by British. The city was renamed as Mumbai in 1995. The renaming was a result of a movement that was directed to strengthen Marathi identity. However, the city is still largely known as Bombay despite official name change.
